My Frenchy Cupboard: Brought to you by chalk paint and white dishes

My cupboard.  It has been quite the relationship, she and I have come a long way.  I’ve loved her, I’ve hated her, and now I love her again.  From the moment my carpenter husband framed up our new rooms within what once was our sitting room, I knew the end of that newly created hallway was screaming for a built in.  Don’t you agree?  This is the before:

Then I saw this in BHG:

So my husband sketched this one for me to fit into our space:

And then I fell in love with this chalk paint board from Barb’s studio (the one in the middle):

And so after the cupboard was built and installed, I painted it:

And within seconds of my husband attaching the hardware to the completely finished piece, I turned toward him and said “I hate it”.

So I completely repainted it (again, using chalk paint).  This time I added a touch of sass with one of Melanie Royals designs, the back of the cupboard was done using a zebra stencil.  You can click here to see where I got mine.

Now I love her again, and she is perfect crammed full of white dishes.

Love,

Amy

PS: I saved the best for last, see you on Friday :) !

The zebra design invites you in. Love the change!

  3. Oh, WOW, Amy! So many times things I see at your house make me say “Wow!”

First of all, I absolutely love that cupboard. It’s just beautiful. Actually, I don’t think anyone would have hated the first finish, but the second one is gorgeous! And that zebra back is worthy of a double wow.

You and your husband are quite a team!

  4. Nancy (Mom) says:

Love, Love, Love IT! You did a great job, as usual! Can’t wait to see her in person, she is just beautiful, just like you – sorry I had to throw that in – HA! Love you!

I’m pretty sure I could live in this old “sitting room” turned “new rooms/hallway”. The white dishes…swoon…..(I have one of those ruffly/ripply bowls on display in my china cab., too), the chalk paint, the unexpected zebra print background……

Is it unnatural to have a mudroom/hallway openhouse party? Cuz’ you totally should. :)

  6. Jill says:

Wow!!…That is really beautiful! Love the zebra print in the back of it!

  7. My lands Amy! She deserves a name… Luxely… because she is every bit of fabulous! I’m with you on the original finish, looked fabulous on one cupboard but maybe too much overall. Your end result is exquisite, what a fine eye you have! (and painting talent to boot!)

Amy, I love what you’ve done. The cupboard is perfect (I’m so glad you changed it) and your blog is beautiful. Well done! Barb

  13. Amy, this is SOOO cool! I love the juxtaposition of my zebra pattern stencil with the classic furniture design. Great job by both you and your husband. (so jealous that you have a finish carpenter in the house!). I was so inspired I featured your project in today’s Wallternatives blog post on Design Amour. Keep it up! http://designamour.com/2011/08/30/stencil-wall-ternatives-2/

  14. Kathy says:

Amy where did you get the hardware? It is a perfect accent for your gorgeous cupboard!

  15. Robyn says:

Hi! I LOVE what you have done :) I also wanted to say that I am so glad you repainted the cupboard because it looks so wonderful now and I have to say that I wasn’t so crazy about the original paint job. I know that I am not a huge fan of the distressed look, but I think it can work well with a few smaller pieces and something this majestic needed to not look so distressed.

Great job! Love your house :)

  16. I adore the cabinet and the zebra stencil behind it! I have a white kitchen too and some open shelves which I’ve been wanting to jazz up. A fun stencil seems like the perfect solution!
    Here’s a pic I just posted
