House Progress: the masonry

We have been in the world of brick for weeks now.  Our brick masons are three generations of the hardest working guys on the planet.  Salt of the earth kind of people, and they did a great job.  Most of the brick work is done and it is helping the project take shape.  No these bricks do not match, but the brick on the house is going to be painted, so matching the brick on the steps was not necessary.

The progress is fun.  And speaking of fun, have I ever told you that I am a Hokie?  Both my husband and I went to Virginia Tech and we got our hands on a piece of Hokie Stone…fresh off the campus.  We are trying to work it into the house somehow:

And lastly, my two shaggy blondes hanging out on the screened porch (that is not yet screened).

Giving Thanks

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 100

This Thanksgiving I pray we are all deeply aware of the great love of God.  That we fully comprehend that the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, so that he can show his great might on behalf of those whose heart is blameless toward him.  I pray we all know that great is the Lord, who delights in the welfare of his servant!  And through this knowledge, and regardless of our circumstances, we have but nothing to do than to give thanks to the One who is worthy.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Painting a Face: a first for me

Isn’t she beautiful.  She is the creation of Pino Daeni, one of my new favorite artists.  I came across an old book of his, “Pino: Contemporary Realism” and was struck by her.  I had never painted a face, was scared to death of attempting it, but there was something about her that just really made me want to try.  So my girls sat on the couch knitting scarves, I sat at my easel praying and painting, and all three of us listened to Taylor Swift sing about it being too late for you and your white horse to come around.  It was a great Saturday.

I like my version of Pino’s beauty, I think mainly because I am surprised that I don’t hate it.  She’s different.  Mine is a little “flatter” than the original, and she doesn’t quite have the expression on her face that somehow perfectly describes her personality when Pino painted her.  I was smitten with her expression and I so tried to somehow capture it, I just couldn’t quite find it in the end.  But what I learned was that I actually really enjoy painting the details.  Who would of thought!  I have always been drawn to the abstract, the looseness of painting, and this one was not that at all (at least not in the face); but I enjoyed the challenge. I think she will find a place on a wall somewhere in my house.

Purpose in Painting?

Last year we had dinner with a missionary family from our church.  We sat across the table from this couple and listened.  I was in awe of what they were doing.  They live and serve in Zimbabwe, often under very dangerous conditions.  The list of all that they deal with and suffer through, was far too much for my mind and heart to handle over a plate of spaghetti.  We left that dinner and I looked at my husband and said “We are losers”.  The same was true this past week.  We had yet another dinner with one of my favorite people walking this planet.  His name is Doug and he is the Executive Director for Tiny Hands International (you see their “One Girl” button over on the right side of my blog).  The work that they do in the name of Christ, is the work most of us wouldn’t dare even think about, much less be a part of.  But he does it, along with an amazing team all over the world.  Again, my husband and I left our time with him and were too humbled to really even speak in the car on the way home.

So what’s a girl to do that thinks painting has something to do with her purpose?  Painting.  I would feel a lot less guilty if the passion in my heart was more clearly servant-like.  I know I’m being cynical, and I certainly do not mean to offend any artists out there that might be reading. My heart tells me that Jesus is all over this painting thing, but then I hang out with people like Doug and I think “who the heck cares about a painting”!  I just can’t help but wonder what God is up to with me.  Why oh why do I feel such passion for painting?  Until I figure this out, in the meantime, I’m going to keep painting because I simply cannot, not paint.

So while we are on the subject of art, are you familiar with Susie Pryor’s work?  She is a genius and her art is like beautiful poetry.  Here are a few my favorites:

I love every single thing she has ever painted, and since I do not have an art teacher, I’m allowing her work to teach me a few things.  I painted a couple of her little girls as practice and to date, they are my favorite paintings I have completed  copied (disclaimer: they are stacked in my art corner and were only painted as practice, for my experimentation, never to be claimed as my own).   A new artist friend of mine told me recently “God has enough creativity to go around for all of us”.  She is so right, but the question is do I have enough faith to trust him?  Maybe.  I’m getting braver and braver.  But for now, here is my practice.  I loved painting these and I learned so much, these are mine:

I have got to start painting my own stuff…have I ever said that before?!?
