Royal Design Studio Stencil Giveaway Day!

How many times have you heard me talk about stencils on this blog?  Probably too many, I know.  I love the way they can change a room, or even a piece of furniture, with very little effort and (no offense intended) skill.  Stencils are easy, therefore I love them, and maybe you should too if you have a project you have been wanting to start.  Today at Playing Sublimely, Royal Designs is giving away a stencil of $50 or less.  Any stencil, your choice.  If you are interested in trying one of these stencils out, all you have to do is leave me a comment and tell me which stencil you would use and what your project would be if you won.  Maybe you have a wall you want to spice up a little, or maybe you have a piece of furniture you would like to makeover.  Click on over to Royal Designs and browse the possibilities, then come back and tell me your choice.

Here are a few of the makeovers I have created with Royal Design’s stencils:

And here is my latest stencil project (still in process):
My stencil choice for this room was Florentine Damask, you can see and purchase the stencil by clicking here.  It’s lovely and elegant and is perfect in this sitting room.

So tell me…which one would you choose?  This giveaway will stay open until Tuesday night at midnight; at which point I will put every ones name in a hat, wake up Thomas and have him draw out a name.  Perhaps I can find a more legit way to randomly choose a winner.  In the meantime, check out Royal Designs website and pick a stencil!

Royal Designs is giving away a free stencil on Monday for one of you sweet readers.  It’s a great opportunity to transform a room, a piece of furniture, or maybe some kind of decorative accessory for a space like the one pictured above.  I will show you my latest project with one of Melanie’s great stencils, and you will have a chance to win one of your own.  See you on Monday!

A before and after built-in

The finishing touches are happening in some of our rooms, and you know I was going to find a way to use Annie Sloan’s chalk paint.  My husband built this shelf for me several years ago.  The background was the first decorative finish I ever tried my hand at.  It was ok, but it I wanted it to have a different look since the room was changing after construction.   Here is my inspiration photo from a collection called Eloquence.  As soon as I saw this finish, I knew I wanted to recreate it somewhere:

Want the formula I used to get the look?

The background is 1/3 each of White, Paris Grey, and Duck Egg Blue.  The main cabinet is 1/2 white and 1/2 old white.  The gold trim detail is gold acrylic paint (any kind will do).  I sealed the entire piece with Annie Sloan’s clear wax and then top-coated the entire piece with Annie Sloan’s dark wax to give it some age.  Done.  Simple as that.

Here are the details:

Curious about that photo?  It’s my favorite picture of Thomas from the smart photography eye of my sister.  My cup does indeed runneth over.  I hope you are all having a great week.

Our Favorite Room:: The Screened Porch

It’s our favorite room in the house…without a doubt.  Our family lives out here, and it’s everything I hoped it would be.  Because we live in a fairly mild climate, we will likely be able to use this space 10 months out of the year.  Aside from the foundation and framing, much of this room my carpenter husband and I did ourselves.  I have provided links to previous posts that documented the process of this space (if by chance you would like to click back for sources or some of our inspiration pictures).

Long before the room was ready, I refinished my $25 table with a chalk paint technique.  It’s a great table.  And that french limestone fireplace…oh that fireplace!  Love her.  My husband installed it because our brick mason was less than enthusiastic about the job.  It is practically assumed that if the temperature drops below 80 degrees, I will be burning a fire.

I could have done without the hideous television hanging over the fireplace; but it makes my football loving husband very happy, and so it makes me happy.  He dreams at night about watching his beloved Hokies on this television in the fall.  In fact, it is almost the main reason he wanted to build the porch.

The decorative finish on the walls was not easy.  The technique was difficult to execute and took me weeks to finish.  I only have small pockets of time here and there to work, but finally I got the product to cooperate and look the way I envisioned.  And in the background is a little sneak peak of the new family room.  We have not completely moved in yet, but my chandelier is up and shining brightly.

The ceiling.  We did not install the reclaimed timbers ourselves, but I did seal them.  Again, a lot of work, but worth it.

Here is the path and door that leads you outside:

And one last view from the opposite side of the room.  We are so glad this space is done!
