Our Homeschool Room

C

It’s my new favorite room in the house, and it’s the one we have waited on the longest to be complete.  Do you remember about a year ago, we tore our roof off the house and went up with a higher pitch. raisin-the-roof-600x400

And then he took awesome to a new level and made it happen for me.  The girls and I spend our days together here, and it’s about as good as it gets for all of us.homeschool room1

The portraits I painted of the girls finally have a home.table

Their bedroom is almost complete too, and here is a new abstract I painted for their space.  It’s still drying.

When I was a little girl, I would line up my Cabbage Patch Dolls and stuffed animals in my room and play school.  I was made to teach, and now I get to do it for real, with my own children.  God is good.  We were 6 months late completing the project, but it was totally worth the wait.  Hope you love it like we do.homeschool room1

Our Favorite Room:: The Screened Porch

It’s our favorite room in the house…without a doubt.  Our family lives out here, and it’s everything I hoped it would be.  Because we live in a fairly mild climate, we will likely be able to use this space 10 months out of the year.  Aside from the foundation and framing, much of this room my carpenter husband and I did ourselves.  I have provided links to previous posts that documented the process of this space (if by chance you would like to click back for sources or some of our inspiration pictures).

Long before the room was ready, I refinished my $25 table with a chalk paint technique.  It’s a great table.  And that french limestone fireplace…oh that fireplace!  Love her.  My husband installed it because our brick mason was less than enthusiastic about the job.  It is practically assumed that if the temperature drops below 80 degrees, I will be burning a fire.

I could have done without the hideous television hanging over the fireplace; but it makes my football loving husband very happy, and so it makes me happy.  He dreams at night about watching his beloved Hokies on this television in the fall.  In fact, it is almost the main reason he wanted to build the porch.

The decorative finish on the walls was not easy.  The technique was difficult to execute and took me weeks to finish.  I only have small pockets of time here and there to work, but finally I got the product to cooperate and look the way I envisioned.  And in the background is a little sneak peak of the new family room.  We have not completely moved in yet, but my chandelier is up and shining brightly.

The ceiling.  We did not install the reclaimed timbers ourselves, but I did seal them.  Again, a lot of work, but worth it.

Here is the path and door that leads you outside:

And one last view from the opposite side of the room.  We are so glad this space is done!

Elegant Bedrooms

We are getting to the fun part.  The framing is complete, the electrical is almost done, and I am flirting with the idea of starting to think about interiors.  I have refused to let my mind wander there until know, because it always just seems to make things go slower.  The girls are getting a new room though, and I have been flipping through Pinterest for inspiration.  Here are a few of my favorites.  These are all over the top of course, but you can always just pick a few ideas from rooms like these.

Lovely, aren’t they? We will see what we come up with.  All sources can be found here.

A Sneak Peak: The Coastal Living Idea House

Are your little ones back in school yet?  Mine just finished their first full week.  Each year I struggle with welcoming a new school year.  It is difficult for me to gracefully walk away from the slower paced, late to rise, sand between our toes kind of days that the summer provides.  But life moves on.  My sweet Ella broke her arm the day before the first day of school.  That girl of mine knows how to go out with a bang.

But before I start lighting fall candles and wearing scarves, here is a sneak peak at next months Coastal Living Idea House.  I was back home a few weeks ago visiting my family at the beach; we broke away from our beach chairs for an afternoon and my Dad took the girls and I through the idea house.  It’s a great house, and I think the dining room above was my favorite feature.  I loved the upholstered bench seating.  There are lots of other great details though (one of which is a great outdoor area).  Here is a peak:
