The Great Wall of Prayer

full wallIt’s the two story wall that leads up to our homeschooling room.  It’s a big wall, and I was having a tough time determining how I was going to make it pretty.  It was too large of a space to leave it painted the neutral wall color throughout our house, it bored me.  I knew it needed something fun.  We ascend and descend those stairs at least 20 times a day; and on one of those many trips, it hit me.  Yep, that’s gonna be a chalkboard wall of prayer.  My husband said, “You’re weird.”  I said, “I know, I can’t help it.”CarolineWe painted the entire wall with chalkboard paint using a two story ladder, a level, an overhead projector, and chalk; and we now have a place to write down our prayers that we bring boldly before the throne of grace.  You know you can do that, right?  No tipping toeing into His presence with small requests.  You can be bold.  You should totally have a chalkboard wall too.  I’m certain of it.

We hung empty gold picture frames (I’m a picture frame hoarder), so each of us has our own space to write requests.

So now when I sit with the girls at our table, my view towards the stairs is a better one.  It makes me happy.
Homeschool Room And completely changeable whenever I want it to say something else.  I love that.  For now though, I’m sticking with asking for mercy.  Mercy And if you are ever not sure what to pray for, take it from Thomas, just pray for trains.  Always pray for more trains.

A few answers to questions you may ask:

-I used chalkboard paint from Home Depot, nothing fancy.

-I did not season the board like everyone in the universe says you must do before you use it the first time.  There were two reasons for this.  One, the wall was too big and I refused.  Secondly, as long as I wipe off the chalk with a wet rag as opposed to a dry eraser, I cannot see any “ghost lettering” that people say will be left behind.  It wasn’t an issue for me at all.

-The print font I used is called Barocca Monograms, and the fancier letters I free handed on my own after looking at a few online that I liked.  The font of our names is written in Brush Script.

I will most certainly paint another surface in my house with chalkboard paint.  I’m irritated it took me this long to do.  Be brave.  Be bold.  Go do it.  You will love it.

My Painted Cabinet: Tissue Paper Technique

hall built-inShe’s pretty now, but she didn’t start off that way.  Few things in this house have stayed the same, but this built-in somehow survived the remodeling.  Now there is a wall in front of her that you can see in this first picture.  At one point I painted the cabinet black, that was okay for awhile, but too much black eventually starts sucking joy out of a room (at least for me).  Once the new wall went in, the space got smaller, and the color needed to be lighter.  old bookcaseA few things needed to happen.  Kev built me 3 bigs doors that matched the 4 existing ones at the bottom.  I applied a raised stencil on the bottom doors.  I do not have this process documented in pictures, but you can click here to see how I have stenciled other things in the house.  The stencil pattern is from Melanie Royals (of course), but I do not think it is available anymore (I looked).  However, there are hundreds of other ones that would be great choices for a similar project, click here to visit her site.  ascp cabinet Because the cabinet was old and beat up in some areas, I used a tissue paper technique over the entire surface.  Click here to view a video on how to tissue paper a surface.  The technique and process is what I am recommending from this video, not necessarily the products.  I did not use any of the products on this video.  Tissue paper is a great way to add texture to a surface, give it some age, and also hide imperfections.  This technique is not desirable for every surface.  I don’t care for it on walls (though the attached video demonstration is of a wall) and I wouldn’t recommend it for you grandmother’s antique mahogany chest she left you in her will.  However, if you have a piece of furniture in your house that is mostly fake wood and has a laminate countertop from the 70′s on top of it…then you my friend, may have the perfect piece of furniture for a tissue paper technique. door facesAs I said before, my surface was first painted black and I applied the tissue paper at this step.  Over top of that, I painted 50/50 Paris Grey & Pure White chalk paint by Annie Sloan.  I could have used Annie Sloan’s wax to seal this, but I don’t always love the surface with a wax topcoat, so I used a water-based sealer instead.  Click here to view what I used.
cornerNow she is frenchy and soft and blue and I like her much more.  I’m not opposed to painting her again though if I don’t like the color later on, it’s just paint.  ascp cabinetIn other news: we took our kids to Washington DC last week for Spiring Break.  My brother-in-law shares a zip code with President Obama, so we lived the city life for a few days, and saw the sights.  A few reflections: if you are a mother of small children and you live in a city that requires no personal vehicle and you have to either walk everywhere or get on the Metro where no one smiles…please email me or comment below so that I can personally respond and tell you how much I admire you.  Also, the Cherry Blossom festival starts mid-March and ends mid-April.  Not sure why, we did not see one cherry blossom.  We did not take jackets and we froze the whole time.  Also, most of our knowledge of American history and/or the Smithsonian Museum comes from movies.  My kids referenced Night of the Museum 2 about 45 times, and I’m pretty sure at one point the words came out of my mouth, “I think that’s where the aliens landed in Independence Day.”  American History is officially on deck for next year in 5th grade.  Lastly, if you have a four year old, don’t take him.kids and capital

Living life from the sectional

Instagram has helped subside the boredom a little over the past week.  It’s been awhile since I have been this sick.  Motherhood has built up an impressive immune system in my body, and in recent years, I don’t typically catch what the kids bring home.  But this wretched chest cold attacked no one but me, and I’ve been permanently attached to the sofa for a week…and I’m about to go insane!

I have watched Quang Ho’s entire painting series though, which I must admit, I didn’t hate.  This man is brilliant, and something about  his style and personality, I really love.  He’s a philosopher/painter, and his theory on creating art is tightly woven into one’s ability to remove the obstacle of fear from the equation.  Good art he claims, is expressed when the person removes their ego from the art form, and fearlessly creates.  He says we will experience and create higher level art, when we are free from those blocks.  I happen to agree with him, and I think we will find this is also where higher level living happens as well.  If we view our lives as a painting, I think our canvas’ will end up more beautiful if we got rid of fear and ego there as well.  I don’t think his idea holds true for painting alone.  I have been teaching my Moses study on Sunday mornings these past few weeks, and I’m watching how God is shining new light from a different angle on this study.  This idea of fear and lack of belief is what keeps rising to the surface, and I suppose that is why I found Ho’s perspective so interesting.Quang And then there are these chicken eggs we are hatching.  I called my local cooperative extension to see if they had an embryology group that allowed children to care for and hatch chickens.  Turns out they do, and it’s free, and they give you tons of literature and curriculum materials, and you bring home 30 chicken eggs and an incubator.  Pure awesomeness.  Every three days you “candle” the eggs (aka, go in a dark room with a little flashlight) and you can see everything happening on the inside.  I am more excited than my kids and we are charting this whole process.  So the new dilemma is how to break it to Kev that I intend on keeping all these chickens in my backyard.eggs I thought I had picked a chicken coop, it was this one of course.  Of course.
amazing_homebuilt_chicken_coop But then I saw this one.  Is that a chandelier hanging overhead?  Ummmmm….I change my mind, definatley this one.  And I’m moving out there as well.  Caroline says she is too, if we can put a pink pig out there with us.  Why not.  Pink pigs, chickens, and chandeliers.  Let’s do it.awesome-chicken-coopIf you would like to follow us on Instagram, you can go over to the right hand side of this blog page to get connected.

Be Thou My Vision

He calls us to what we cannot do in our own strength.  It’s the beautiful waltz of life that our Bridegroom leads us through.  It’s how He ordained it to be from the very beginning.  The sooner we accept, in joy, the faith process; the more content our restless souls will become.  The weak are made strong, the blind given sight, the restless find rest.  It’s what He does, it’s who He is, and who He will always be.

I sit and stare at a blank screen in front of me, words need to fill it soon.  I just keep praying for more of Him, because He is what I need in my time of being stretched.  He is the One stretching, and the One waiting to fill in the gaps.  And the grace filled thing is, He never denies us more of Himself.  So I know I approach His throne in confidence for what I ask.   I pray, and I wait for direction, then I pray some more for vision, and then I came across this:

90854f9e9b0390d9c8b6f053e296546aAnd so now I love her.  Click here to love her blog also.  She painted the words to the hymn “Be Thou My Vision” on her bedroom wall.  The reminder of the sweet Irish hymn words made me smile.  Maybe they will make you smile too.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

He is your vision and wisdom, your shield and your strength, your High King and victory, your inspiration and true Word.  Allow Him and all He promises to be to lead you… your Groom is waiting to dance.  Have a beautiful weekend.
